Collection, 1766-1963.

This collection consists largely of a variety of documents (receipts, deeds, accounts, letters) relating mostly to Jacob Bear, Benjamin Graves, Jacob Sipe, and the Dean (Deane, Deen) and Harnsberger (Hansberger) families of Rockingham, Madison, Orange, and Augusta Counties, Va., from 1766 to 1963. Of particular interest are the 1842 Elk Run Class Book; the 1858-59 Housekeeping Book, which lists household and farm items needed for life at the time; and accounts of the Mt. Vernon Iron Works (Rockingham County) from 1878-1879. (See oversize). [from Finding Aid].

Graves, Benjamin Carter, 1901-1985

Benjamin Franklin Graves was born in Virginia in 1773. At the time of the outbreak of the War of 1812, Graves was living in Lexington, KY. Graves joined the Kentucky Militia under the command of Col. Lewis. In 1813, at the Battle of the River Raisin, Graves was captured by a Native American and was never heard from again. Graves County, KY was named in his honor in 1823.
